TITLE OF THE ACTIVITY: Living Legacies :Mapping Our Dance Family Tree

I want to lead a session to map our own individual “family tree” of teachers and then share that- make a display to see our relationships and how the work evolves around the globe.

DETAILED CONTENT DESCRIPTION

We all have a living legacy- our teachers and mentors and many of them overlap. I’m interested in making this visible and mapping out the living histories of participant to make a bigger “family tree”.

The process of doing this will visually demonstrate the inter-relationship between different disciplines and also the global nature of our work and the fact that its passed down person to person.  Dance teaching evolves in relationship- work develops between student and teacher and artist and teacher.  The process will build community and open up new networks and make visible some of these connections.

During the process of mapping other resources will be named and hearing from each participant, their area of expertise, and their values - a manifesto of sorts can be developed.

I have found in the dance world that lineage is important for this sector especially when having to argue for or explain to other sectors about the types of resources we need to work.   Dance education is unique in that is a collective experience and movement is a universal language. One can’t go off alone and train in dance- it’s a group activity. It builds skills and trains perceptions and awareness that other art forms and educational fields of study do not- in an embodied way.

The mapping exercise will bring some of this to the forefront and allow us to articulate some unique reasons why dance studies are vitally important in education on its own terms.

The results can be made into a digital map and the exercise can be repeated and the tree expand and grow.

Format :Interactive session and on-going display/station to share and also allow others to do activity in own time. it includes dialogue, mapping and sharing stories, possibly using digital format to share and allow the project to keep evolving.

Participating requirements (for whom is this workshop for?) ALL- Everyone can do this and can also include passers by at the festival.

- TIME REQUIREMENTS (how much time do you need for sharing?)  1-2 hours and can set up something that people can do in their own time and add to the display

- SPACE REQUIREMENTS (what kind of space do you require for your sharing? studio size etc

it would be great to have a space with a table so people could have the option and a space to have the display visible for the rest of the weekend.

Technical requirements: possibly a projector or overhead projector, paper/pens, drawing supplies, blue tac, string,  a table and possibly a small desk for the display

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Anyone can participate to map their history and add it- so if there would be a place I could share the work and add to it daily. Maybe set up a “station” or a desk for people to sit and do this and then a place to add to it. So it can grow and accumulate over the weekend
