SAVE OUR SPINES!! The Critical Importance of Side-Bending
The most up-to-date understanding of spinal mechanics is of fundamental importance for re-considering training methods in all forms of physical education.
If the spine is well organized, it can raise endurance and power for the athlete, as well as provide clean geometry for the dancer and practical solutions for anyone moving in all situations.
The most salient aspect of this relatively new information is the way the healthy spine provides for weight and load transfer during a potentially dynamic, assymetrical organization of support. Sustainable use of the spine is facilitated by knowlege of what anatomical attributes constitute spinal alignment, insuring the appropriate use of the different areas: lumbar, cervical and thoracic. Understanding the way aligned spinal structures transfer energy and impact by collaborating with the myofascial systems is visible in the lateral flexion or extension of the spine. The colloquial term for lateral spinal flexion or extension is Side-Bending; a sophisticated, twisting, inclining and bending movement that is most often loaded towards primary supports, and includes limited mobility in specific vertebral groups. The Axis Syllabus Research Community is currently in a brain-storming process to note and map the various kinds of SB phenomena through different postural relationships to support. We have begun to list and organize our findings according to what we think are appropriate applications of SB in dynamic and non--
