The cisrculation

I have conceived this proposition during an internship organised by the Montbard conservatory. 'Relationship in dance' whas the theme of the week. The base of the proposition is a way to work in improvisation with a precise frame.

Aim : how to do in an emergency situation : lern to avoid bad stress, react properly and quickly

The groups I had during this experience :

- 10 adults, beginners, and , the most of them trained in ballet.

- 9 students (15-20 years old) , advanced level, trained mostly in ballet and also in choreology (according that choreologie is one of the contemporary developements of Laban's works)

BASE :

Learning a fast dance, based on two points :

  • A lot of travel folowing clear lines along the flor. Thoses lignes create a kind of maze : the dancer cross the space in many directions, and visit several times the sames spaces.

  • Some movements let the dancer move in the same place for some seconds, between two traveling moments.

With the beginners, the travels were clear : straight lines, parallels to the walls, with the advanced students, there were curved and diagonal straight line travels.

Wtih the beginners the dance is with counts (I have made this choice to make them more confortable : to have a reassuring point of reference), not for the students.

First step :

The dance is danced together, but one by one, with a dancer begining every 8 bit, and then every 4 bit.

The task is to stay as close as possible to the original dance, while avoiding the ccraschs between dancers.

Step 2 :

With the same process to go one by one, dancers now can look at each others and create light contact between them when they cross someone.

Step 3 :

Now it's time for more deconstruction : so dancers can, simultaneously or not :

  • take back a pathway without having achieve the entire dance, by taking the opportunity of a crossing point.

  • Avoiding a part of the dance, again by taking the opportunity of a crossing point

  • interacting with another dancer along a traveling part of the dance

  • intercating with an other dancer on a fixed point of the dance, and why not arriving to a micro duet

  • reversing the dance

With the first step, the students learn to deal with the stress (and this step is the oportunity to speak about Cunningham's work)

With the second step, they have to let go the memory, to use a king of automaticism to perform the dance to be able to add new intentions to feed their inteprétations.

With the third step, it's now the moment to be more creativ, and to take the opportunities given by the original movement mixed to a meeting with somebody else.
